Subdomain
A Subdomain is an additional level of specification that can be added to a second-level domain (SLD). For example, in the URL photos.website.com, the website is the second level domain and 'photos' is website.com's subdomain. Subdomains can be used to direct traffic to a certain section on a website and they can even point to a different IP than the second-level domain. Many SEO professionals are of the opinion that Google considers a domain and its subdomain to be different entities when it comes to PageRank.
